This is spot on Matt.
As Google introduces more personalization into their search results, you have to wonder how valid the rankings are. As Nick mentions above, it seems that visitors and conversions are much more relevant measure of SEO results. Although educating clients on this may be a challenge.

Its getting a lot tougher to check legitimate SERP and index information. I understand google's position but even for non-seo this information is relevent.

Nice post Matt, thanks a lot for sharing this valuable information. I totally agree with you as for as the search algos have been updated time by time but there has been no reliable improvement in SERP reports. Is there any reliable alternative for that?

Hi Matt,
Excellent post! I have seen that for years that Google does not approve of search engine ranking software products.

On another note, I have recently (over the past 6 to 12 months) stopped providing search engine ranking/position reports to our SEO clients as we have found that not only are they not accurate, but they fluctuate so much that it is not a good item to use to measure SEO results.

Since we phased out the search engine ranking reports we now focus on building a client's visitors and conversions from their SEO efforts.

It is definitely going to get much tougher in the near future to really understand where all your visitors are coming from. Especially with so many changes happening in the search engines right now to include personalized search and social media.
